The idea of you being a physical and a digital entity is becoming extremely essential for everyone.
But how can you be a Digital entity?
Over the past decade, interest areas for people have increased(broadened), people are passionate towards a niche, people want customised Instagram feeds, etc. I mean to say that people are very clear about what they want.
A person is looked upon with curiosity only if he/she can offer something valuable to a particular niche in which they are an expert in.
Imagine that you have some hiccups while you perform your daily tasks at work. You would go straight to someone who is an expert in that area seeking for help right?
Now how did you establish that he/she was an expert in that area?
- Someone told you so → Recommendation
- You already worked with him/her and you know their value → Reputation
- The person is famous in the organization for the work he does → Virality or
- There is a department dedicated to fixing issues and you went straight there → Direct Source
These are some of the ways a person is found offline.
Did you know that the Digital Revolution phase 4 has opened new dimensions of you being found by other people (outside the organization in this case)?
Of course, you know that. But how educated/relevant are you when it comes to making sure you are found by the rest of the world in similar interest areas?
“Success is when people search your name on google instead of Facebook” — Anonymous. I fell for that once! LOL
This is where the idea of building a strong digital Identity comes into play.
Search engines are taking over in terms of looking up for content. A common man is constantly making use of search engines and other Social media platforms to find something. Which means that he/she knows that the information is available there.
Let us look at how data has transitioned from one form to other.
You would have learnt that stored or curated information smoothly transitioned from paper to cassettes to floppies to Magnetic cards to CDs to storage devices and so on. Searching for information on these devices kept becoming more easier from literally flipping pages to use of a search bar to look for something on a hard disk.
You now have a revolutionary technology which is far from its developmental stages where all the data you need is somewhere in the cloud storage(private/public). You may think it is just another transition of data storage. To answer that it is a Yes and a No.
Yes — It is another transition.
No — It is not just transition.
The transition of data has been smooth over the years but have personalities transition?
This is one of the reasons they call it a Revolution!
Many are still ignorant of the fact that this is a huge possibility.
So what exactly is the existence of an online personality?
Imagine you search for a particular topic and your name is somewhere mentioned in the search list and vice versa. But your name doesn't magically show up, right?
Google and other big players are constantly changing their algorithms to make sure the most relevant content is displayed when a search is performed.
Data going into the cloud(public) means your data can be accessed to perform research, analysis and so on for the betterment of internet consumption.
But how smart are you to make sure you are found on the search results is the question. Maybe a recruiter searches for best photographers in Navi Mumbai, and how sure are you that your name comes up on google search? or do you even know that this was possible?
